We’re working on teaching Pinot how to roll over. He’s struggling a little with down, which is the cornerstone piece. He is completely unmotivated if food isn’t involved, which isn’t terribly surprising. But after a few days, I think he’s more or less got it. I think roll over will come quickly from here. Christina’s been enjoying doing it with me, and I like spending that time with her too. And Pinot, at a very minimum, enjoys the treats.

Against my better judgment, I solved a longstanding problem at work today. It was so simple and so drastic an improvement, it’s ridiculous that no one had ever thought of it before. Problem solved, I guess.

I rediscovered an old playlist – songs that defined my life, every one with a story. Someday I want to write a book holding all of those stories. As I was listening to it after the kids went to bed, I thought about the sermon I wrote for church that was so well received and how good it made me feel to write it. Why am I holding back on this? It’s time to write.

Jupiter. In astrology, it represents higher learning. I think I still have a lot to learn. Today was a challenge. I didn’t realize Billy had a football game, we haven’t gone food shopping this week so the kids didn’t have dinner, and I had chorus rehearsal. Tonight’s lesson was: trust your inner strength. You can get through this. And even when you are alone, you are not alone.

Christina woke up this morning with a fever, so I had a partner at work today. And literally everyone on my team was out of the office, so I really didn’t do much either. Our house cleaners didn’t come and we had no food to cook. And yet we still had homemade pasta carbonara and Christina still made her funny jokes and work got done. Funny how that works.

Poor Pinot has another abscess. The vet recommended having his anal glands removed so that it doesn’t keep happening. This was his second one this year and it is very painful to drain when they happen. Apparently once he’s had them, he becomes more prone to them in the future. Poor guy. Not sure what we’ll do. I just want him to be a happy boy.

I love the iPhone night goggles… what amazing detail in the night shots!

Today was a lot of putting one foot in front of the other, trying to get stuff done instead of putting it off, with approximately a 72% success rate.

I’ve heard the newer iPhones take better night photos, and based on this, I’d agree. It’s not the best shot I’ve ever taken, but the image quality is probably even better than my (now decrepitly ancient) DSLR. I guess sometimes it pays to upgrade.

The trip is underway. We were delayed a few hours because our a/c stopped working last night. The technician came by this morning and luckily it was a quick, easy fix. And then on the road! We couldn’t agree on where to go for dinner once we arrived in Virginia, and Robin and Christina weren’t thrilled about where we ended up, but turns out the food was great and they had something for everyone. I even got a BLT, which I had been craving in the car but never thought in a million years I’d find on any menu anywhere on our way. We hit traffic as we crossed into South Carolina for about 50 miles, but otherwise was smooth sailing. Tomorrow we head through Washington, DC, Baltimore, and NYC… headed through the Bronx at the end of a Yankees game… so I am not expecting great things, traffic-wise. I made a great 60’s playlist (I mean, truly great), and it is 19 hours of music, so it should get us to New Haven, no problem. I sang almost the whole way today. I’m sure I drove Billy crazy, but OH FUCKING WELL.

I got my activist hat out today and joined my church at the Jacksonville Nehemiah Assembly to try to raise justice issues to our city’s leaders. I have to admit that this is uncomfortable for me and I had a hard time engaging. But I was there. And for whatever little bit, it counts. Maybe next time I won’t be in such a lousy mood to start with.

Thought I’d already uploaded this one. Guess not. My favorite part of this shot is the appearance of Venus. It’s nice to think that as big as this world seems to be sometimes, it’s just a speck in the universe. People on Venus are probably staring at our little glowing speck in the sky, wondering what we see when we gaze back at them.

I have wanted to take this photo for about two weeks but have felt too self conscious to do it with people watching. Today some security guards watched me intently but didn’t say anything and now I’ve got it.

It has been a rough week. A lot of tears, a lot of angst, a lot of trudging through endless emotional muck. February is not my favorite month.
