Robin went to a sleepover yesterday, so I tried to give Christina a sleepover experience by making her waffles. The rest of the day was fairly unexciting. I did some measuring and marking for my advent calendar. Now I just need to assemble it. Haha, “just.” I also finished knitting Siggi’s scarf. I’m going to need some new projects.

Today I pissed Robin off because I refused to talk to her until she stopped screaming at me. She got so angry that she slammed her door in my face and threw a sneaker at the door as hard as she could for good measure. I guess sometimes you just can’t be calm or reasonable, and as long as you’ve got a sneaker and a door, that’s ok.

I didn’t get to have my birthday martini on my birthday, so we went out tonight and celebrated my mom on the anniversary of the day she died. A martini costs the same as a two-course entree and soft drink. The days have been getting away from me, but it’s important for me to remember. I wish there were no regrets, but my relationship with my mom is full of regret. Love and regret. But I raise a toast to her and the continued peace I hope she finally has.

Robin made this amazing cake for us. It was a challenging recipe and it took almost the whole day to make, but she did it herself with minimal supervision. It was incredibly delicious. Didn’t look as perfect as the picture in the book, but pretty close! She loves to bake and I was so happy to support her in it. And I think everyone enjoyed the results!

I’ve got a couple Maine beers left to help keep me there just a little longer. But it’s back to dance class and food shopping and cooking for myself. Vacation is always better than real life.

Not exactly the best vacation photo. We made an unexpected stop in Bangor to stay in a hotel so as to avoid the inch of rain expected tonight. It has been raining steadily all day and I just can’t imagine setting up a tent and feeding ourselves and sleeping all night outside in the rain. The rain is supposed to taper off tomorrow morning, so we’ll try again then. We were disappointed that the hotel pool is closed (wah!), but we have our National Parks board game from Siggi and our chocolate from Wilbur’s in Freeport and we’ll make the most of it anyhow!

We (I) nearly forgot that Christina had a tech rehearsal at the dance studio last night. Thank goodness for phone reminders! We got there about five minutes late, but of course they were running behind. We ended up being there for almost an hour and a half, missing out on a dinner of bacon-wrapped scallops, just sitting in the parking lot waiting around for Christina’s dances. I knew we were in for a wait when I saw a whole bunch of parents tailgating in the parking lot. At least we made it.

Today I had to slow myself down and hold my tongue and instead just sit beside my daughter while she cried. I didn’t ask why, I didn’t beg her to talk to me, I didn’t try to make her feel better, I just sat with her, stroking her hair, until slowly the tears gave way to sniffles, which gave way to sighs. She never did tell me what happened, though I think I have a pretty good idea. I tried my best to bridge the distance today. At least everyone’s going to bed less angry and upset.

We went to Rosina and Dion’s house for a sleepover last night. I had plans to make pina coladas, and not wanting to leave the kids out, I brought the stuff to make Shirley Temples too. In the end, no pina coladas ever got made, but Robin did have enough Shirley Temples to use up a third of a bottle of grenadine and an entire jar of maraschino cherries. I’m gonna need a rain check on those pina coladas.

No scheduled activities today, but I still seem to have had zero down time for myself yet again. It’s already 10pm and I still have to fold laundry from last week! Gym, church work, work work, drive to pharmacy to pick up prescription that still isn’t ready, clean kitchen from dinner two nights ago, cook dinner, eat dinner, clean up dinner, play Harry Potter with Billy and Christina, pay bills, book cheerleading competition hotels, email teachers, put kids to bed, deposit checks (at least I am depositing and not withdrawing)… Not a minute free and no end in sight. I think that laundry’s going to go another day unfolded.
