We had a great time in the French Quarter today. We did some shopping, went to the Voodoo Museum, walked down Bourbon Street, and got to stand outside the timeless Preservation Hall. How cool must that place have been in the 40s with people like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald playing there? One day I hope I’ll get to see a show there. Robin’s competition is almost an afterthought on this trip. It went by way too fast!

Robin and I had a great day. We had trouble locating Cafe Du Monde. After a bunch of wrong turns, we found ourselves in the middle of a cruise ship terminal and at a loss. A nice security guy pointed us toward the outlet mall and we walked around there for what felt like forever. We had given up and decided to go to a second rate beignet place when we walked right into it. Robin’s beignet cherry is officially popped. I think we are going to have to go every day of our trip now. Robin and her team killed it at her competition today. So proud of them. And we finished the night at House of Blues. It was so fun! And delicious!

Long drive to New Orleans today. We ate at Waffle House! Robin was blown away by the fact that we crossed into another time zone. I was blown away by the fact that Robin knew New Orleans is in Louisiana. And now we’re here and I am going to sleep!

August 10
This trip has lived up to every expectation, and I am so grateful to the Universe for obliging me. We ended up not staying for the second game of the doubleheader, but they won the first game big (8-0) and we got to have a great dinner with Siggi and Brett and that was more worth it. They ended up losing the second game big, so obviously we didn’t miss anything .We went to Zaro’s and got black and white cookies, and we went to an Irish pub and watched Olympics and drank beer and honestly it has felt so good to be home. I miss this city with all my heart. I could not live here again with the kids and through the long winters, not to mention how expensive it is, but it feels so good riding the subway and walking through avenues and city blocks. I literally feel at home. Going back to Jacksonville is going to be hard… but we’ll be back.

July 3
We went to the Bee City Zoo, where we were attacked by parakeets, spit on by llamas, and hand fed kangaroos, giraffes, and monkeys. Robin particularly loved petting the bunnies, especially the little black baby bunny that hopped around all over the place. So fun.

We went into Charleston today and spent way more money than we should have. The weather eased a little and it was much cooler than the last few days. Robin traded her phone for a very expensive, very cute pair of shoes that brought big smiles to her face and happiness to my heart. Christina fished Robin’s pen out of the Edisto River and touched a branch in the water even though it had a spider on it. An action-packed day.

We visited Fort Sumter today. We humans have so much history to learn from and yet it feels like we’ve learned so little. Today I stood in the same place where soldiers fought for the integrity of the United States of America over 150 years ago. I could see the artillery in the walls. There were fingerprints in the bricks that were made and laid by hand. And what of that integrity they fought so hard for? Have we come so far since then? Humanity is such a challenge.

We checked Congaree National Park off our list today! We hiked a trail that was described as a good opportunity to spot otters. Unfortunately the creek was almost completely dried up so we didn’t see any. But all the cypress knees were pretty cool.

We have a cute AirBnB in South Carolina for the next few days, right on a little river. Looking forward to exploring the next few days.

I went to my first escape room today and it was more fun than I expected it would be. The people in my group worked really well together, which I think helped a lot. Also we won. I am grateful for the time I got to spend with people from work, but I am ready to go back to my little private office in Jacksonville tomorrow.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do all evening by myself, but the kids took care of that, spending 90 minutes on FaceTime with me after dinner. They all seem to be hanging in while I’m away.

First day of a work-related road trip. I have probably not been as invested as I should be. But I had a nice meal with Sarah and Q and that’s two in-person meals with Q in one year so I win!

I got another flat tire today, my third in four months. Got it replaced in time to drive to Orlando, yay! Now for a good night’s sleep before our big day tomorrow!
