    April 13

Billy and I got married 18 years ago today. Christina had dance right at dinnertime (naturally), so we went out for lunch instead. Not the most romantic anniversary ever, but we’re not the best at romance. Or, I’ll just be blunt: Billy is not the best at romance. He thinks dirty socks and butter boxes sealed with Elmer’s glue make good wrapping paper. It was a nice lunch, though. We went to Canopy Road for brunch and we got a lot of things off our chest. Luckily we only complained about people other than each other. That to me is a very productive date. Who needs romance?

Today I paid Robin $8 to draw a picture. Mostly I wanted her to stop looking so listless and grumpy at the dinner table, so I offered her $2 to do SOMETHING she found at least mildly entertaining for at least ten minutes. She decided to draw, and (surprise) wanted to keep going at the end of the ten minutes. Of course she wanted to be paid by the minute, but instead I asked her to place a value on her finished art – as though she were an artist selling me her work. She said $8, I said $6, and then she went ahead and drew a second picture and threw it in to earn the extra $2. I don’t know if this is smart parenting or lazy parenting because it really feels like I’m paying my kid to like, breathe, but DUDE. How do you get teenagers to do ANYTHING?? At least this way she’s doing something that gets her out of her head AND she’s learning the value that can be gained from doing it. Because let’s face it. Artists can get paid for their art. And why shouldn’t she? Given tonight’s success, I’m thinking of commissioning some work for our bare bedroom wall next. We’ll see. For now I’m just happy with the small window of success we had tonight. Because I know it ain’t gonna last. These kids are wily like foxes. It’s hard to stay in front around here.

Friday… my easy day, when I only have to take one kid to two dance classes and that’s it. I learned that my bacon burger and fries at Chili’s last night was 50 Weight Watchers points. Worth every point. And I spent three hours conquering Excel for no good reason other than in my heart, I needed the win. I’m happy it’s not raining.

I got some things off my chest today. Now it is kind of hovering in the air and I’m not really sure where it’ll land. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure it even matters, but we’ll see. I’m getting tired of second chances, even if I stand to gain from them. Second chances just seem to lead to more second chances. But still… soccer in the shadows. Robin kicked ass, even though they got their asses kicked. A sign of a champion.

I spent a lot of time doing crossword puzzles today. Robin wants to sew another bag, so I took a break to cut more fabric and happened to catch the light on this hibiscus just before it was too late. The hibiscus has been putting on a show lately.

I had all these plans today that just didn’t happen. For one thing, my leg is still killing me from falling in the hole on Monday, so hiking is out. Then I left my phone at home when I went out to take pictures. Then I couldn’t stay awake because I ran out of my medication a couple days ago. So I guess I am going to have to make the most of tomorrow.
