Billy broke out this puzzle the other day, which was a Christmas gift from 2024 that apparently got eaten by the game closet. It’s a fun one, definitely unique. I was happy to get back to the gym today after two weeks of work insanity. It felt like much longer than two weeks. Nice to be approaching a normal trajectory again.

I went against my moral code and worked on a weekend. As much as it goes against my core values, I’m glad I did, because I got more done in three hours than I would have been able to do all week, and now I don’t have to stress about getting it done. We also scratched off a movie card (yes, now we have scratch-off movie cards too) and ended up watching Raiders of the Lost Ark while playing Mount Cleverest. And just because I have to brag, I completed this Sunday Times puzzle with only three mistakes. Maybe I have some of my mom’s crossword talent after all.

Robin stayed home from school today with a fever. Seems she may have caught whatever I had last week. I’ve also apparently developed a mild running injury from overtraining. It is going to take a monumental effort to back off and rest it, but I’m going to have to try anyway. I also have some stretches and strengthening exercises to try, so hopefully it won’t set me back much, if at all. I completed a Saturday New York Times crossword puzzle today with only three errors, which is pretty incredible. Next I tackle my first Sunday puzzle – a feat I have only ever failed so miserably that I vowed never to try again. I’m back now, though, nerdier than ever. So we’ll see.

I had a pretty good day today. Nice run this morning, some good meetings at work, fun conversation at the dinner table, made an octopus, did a crossword puzzle, listened to some podcasts. Now I am ready for bed.

After spending three hours in the car driving close to 100 miles back and forth between two camps and tumbling class, I thought a crossword puzzle by the fire pit would be nice. It wasn’t too hot for a change. But the BUGS. Mosquitos don’t usually bite me, and these looked more like gnats than mosquitos, but there were so many of them. It was so annoying. I didn’t last long. But it was nice while it did last.

It was a pretty good day. Robin worked out with me this morning, even though her feet hurt. Robin broke one of Billy’s mugs, which we made for him one Father’s Day when the kids were little, and she told him about it herself even though she was terrified to do it. She made up for it by baking a giant chocolate chip cookie. Made fish sticks for dinner before taking Christina to dance. Watched the Yankees lose ANOTHER game tonight. And now I’m ready for bed.

April 18
It was kind of a slow day. The kids were off for Good Friday and I didn’t have any meetings at work. Robin and I picked out a cake and some cookies to make tomorrow for Easter dinner. Could very well end up on an episode of “Nailed It” when we’re done, but we’re gonna give it our best shot. Long as it tastes good.

Finished this puzzle today. Putting together all the crowd sections was hard. All the pieces looked basically the same, and the pieces didn’t fit together intuitively. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. But I finished in time to go to cheer, where I also finished a sweater I’ve been working on for more than a year. I just have to block it now. Like the puzzle, it was a hard pattern to follow. I’m surprised it looks like a sweater at all, or that it fits. And then I came home from cheer, ate dinner, and fell asleep on the couch.

One of the things I got for Christmas this year was a book of (for me) solvable New York Times crossword puzzles and a mechanical pencil. I have been doing crosswords on my iPad for a while now, but there’s something satisfying about actually writing the answers on paper using a really nice pencil. I don’t have the temptation for hints, and I get to use an eraser sometimes too. Ok, yes, I’m a dork.

Billy took Christina to her dance classes today and I got the afternoon off. It was so nice not having my work day interrupted and getting to have dinner without rushing. I could get used to this.

Puzzles are my refuge. Billy took this one out, but I’ve taken it over. I’ve also been crossword puzzle crazy. It’s an escape. I appreciate it, but it’s coming at the expense of things that actually do need to get done. I’m trying to care.
