Today was a pretty good day. Christina and I made it out for a paddle and I got to try out my new air compressor. It was sweet! Not to leave Robin out, who hates paddling, we later went to the mall. As a joke, I tried on an absolutely absurd-looking dress. But to my surprise, it looked good on me. I ended up leaving it on the rack because I have absolutely nowhere to wear a slinky shimmery gold dress in Jacksonville, but I keep thinking about it. Robin also tried on a mildly inappropriate dress that she ended up buying, even though SHE has nowhere to wear it, and she hasn’t taken it off since. Maybe wearing the dress isn’t about whether other people see it, or even how i look in it, but about how I feel when I wear it. Maybe I’ll go back for it. Maybe…

It was a pretty good day. I braved my fears and met up with a group of women for a short paddle to a sandbar and back. The current was SO strong. I had to work hard to get there. But the water was gorgeous and the ladies were nice. Came home and went out for burgers with Robin and Billy while Christina was at dance. We played card games and I had some craft beers and it was also nice. And then we tried a new place for dinner, a pizza joint in Riverside called Carmine’s Pie House. It was delicious! Billy and the kids hit the nail on the head with gifts. The only thing I missed was my ritual Grey Goose martini in honor of my mom. I never made it to a place that had a full bar. This will be my first year without that tradition since before she died. I guess I’ll just have to toast to her in my heart this year.

Christina and I broke in the new paddleboards this morning, and I’m so glad I made that impulsive purchase a week or so ago. I had so much fun hanging out with her, and I’m finally starting to feel a little more confident with the boards. I can’t wait to go out again.

I hemmed and hawed and fretted over whether to take out the SUP and use it at Lake Santeetlah. I haven’t used it much and I’m not confident with it, plus there were a lot of people swimming where I wanted to paddle. I was so self conscious. But I did it (no thanks to the kind gentleman who tried to help with his electric pump but instead of inflating it pressed down the air valve so that after I had finished hand pumping it and I disconnected the pump, all the air shot out of it), and we had a lot of fun paddling around the lake. Robin was a little scared to be out by herself, but Christina paddled all over the place for almost an hour and even stood up a couple times. She was even kind enough to give me a turn, which was nice of her. The kids were just thrilled they didn’t have to hike anywhere today. We also introduced them to disc golf, but oh my god it was way too hot and humid. Thank goodness Brett suggested disc golf first so that we could cool off at the lake afterwards. Robin really liked it. Maybe we’ll get a couple discs and play when we get home too.
