Today’s competition did not go much better than yesterday’s. The coach was nicer to the team after their crappy performance, but what she didn’t say, the kids did, and they all took it out on Robin. I wish I knew why it makes some people feel good to make someone else feel bad. It takes all the joy out of a sport that is genuinely cool. We have to compete again tomorrow, but this weekend has been like a giant emotional vacuum. I’m not sure what Robin will have left. I’m not certain anyone still cares.

Today’s Summit competition was one of those days that I think everyone probably wants back. The team did horrendous. Hands down the worst performance of the season, not just at competitions, but in practices too. To add insult to injury, the coach tore the team to shreds afterwards, throwing out hurtful insults and f-bombs, taking out all her frustrations on them. It was a day to forget and yet Robin is still going to bed with a smile on her face. For this I am so proud of her.

Robin has a virtual cheer competition tonight. I can’t quite wrap my head around how that works. Apparently they record the performance and submit it online and then… get an email with their score? The gym has to be silent during the recording, which also goes against everything I know about cheer competitions. We’ll see how this goes!

The competition didn’t end the way we’d hoped after such a successful first day. This season will come down to teamwork, grit, and the will to win. Some people on the team have a lot to learn that is not just how to do the routine, and that may cost them the season. Everything in life is a life lesson. At 13, we’re known to resist those lessons. Ok, at 45 we’re known to resist them too. It happens to the best of us. Progress, then perfection.

It wasn’t the best first outing, but they held up their pyramid and I’m proud of them. I hope this is the kick they need to bump it up a notch for the next one. They’ve got this!

November 9
We saw Robin’s first cheer performance of the season this morning. The team looks pretty good! We all left in a good mood, but for some reason I don’t know, by the time we got home, we were all grouchy. Believe it or not, I turned my mood around by going food shopping. And then I made a really great, really fancy meal of cider-glazed pork loin with sweet potatoes. It took forever to make, but it was so delicious, and fun to make. Altogether, not a bad day.

The girls spent most of practice inside today because it was 99 degrees outside and the gym isn’t air conditioned. I wasn’t invited.

I don’t know if a screen shot of a video counts as a photo, but since this is my project, I say… it does! Robin got her standing back handspring today and it was so exciting. I actually cried a little. I am so proud of her!

April 19
Robin’s team came in 21st place, which I think is pretty incredible. Hers was one of only 68 teams nominated worldwide to even compete in this tournament, and only 34 of those teams made it to finals. And then in finals, she was ranked in the top 25 IN THE WORLD. It was a long couple of days, but we soaked it all in because who knows if or when we will ever be back. Congratulations to Robin and congratulations to Envy!

April 18
As seems to be the case at these things, we went from facing the end of the road to world championships finals in a matter of hours. The girls had a bobble in their performance, but somehow the judges missed it and they ended up hitting zero and moving on to Day 2. Big deal!! I am SO proud of Robin and her teammates.

These girls came out of the tunnel after their performance in tears. Their coach yelled at them and told them it was the worst tumbling she’d ever seen. And then they won first place in their division. And THEN they won grand champions of their whole level. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Robin’s team got second place (out of five) today!! I am so excited for her and her teammates. This is the best she has ever done in cheer, and between this and their bid to Worlds, I couldn’t be any prouder. Congratulations, Robin!

The team behind the team. Envy came in third today, missing second place by a hair. Every competition they get a little bit better and a little bit closer. They really held their own against some very good teams this weekend. I hope they are as proud as I am.

Had lunch with Myrna today, and then we made pins for tomorrow’s cheer competition. Can I just say it is harder to decorate clothespins than you might think! Also, we will be finding glitter in our earwax for the next ten months.
