I managed to drag myself to work today, and rewarded myself with family night at the pool and a nice dinner out at Olive Garden afterwards. I love family time, especially when no one is fighting, like tonight. I am determined to make the most of this summer.

We have a cute AirBnB in South Carolina for the next few days, right on a little river. Looking forward to exploring the next few days.

On a bit of a whim, we went to a Jumbo Shrimp game. They lost, but it was fun! The weather was surprisingly nice – not too hot at all, even with the sun in our faces for the first three innings. It was nice to have some family time.

May 10
A day late, but we went out to celebrate Robin’s first back handspring ever! And we capped off the evening with a couple games of Sushi Go – and I both lost miserably and won a game. I also had an awesome lunch with friends from chorus – so all in all a pretty good day.

March 10
We had a really great day that ended with 30 minutes of yuck that kind of tainted it. Got a lot done – cleaned up the house, weeded the garden, went to the Game Haus and played Sorry and Scattergories, got ice cream, went food shopping, and had tacos for dinner in front of the TV while we watched Big Ten wrestling. Then at bedtime there was some snottiness, yelling, and then crying that had to do with messy rooms, peed-on sheets, and a sink clogged with black water with toilet paper crumpled up all around it. I finished the day with regret. Yin and yang, I suppose. I hope for forgiveness.

November 30
We have all the number candles except 3 and 5, and our 4 has been used so much, it no longer has any wick left, so we had to improvise. We put a zero in there for good luck. Hopefully Billy had a good birthday.

August 29
I didn’t even bother editing this photo. It’s the only one I took and it’s terrible. We went out to a new restaurant. It was good but overpriced, I thought. The food was good, but I’d have expected more ambiance and more of an experience for the price. At least I got out of the house.

Today was the first day of school. It seemed to go pretty well. No one came home miserable, at least. Robin had a panic attack at cheer. She is feeling enormous pressure to do well on her team, which is both in her head and not in her head. I’m trying to help her build up more self confidence so that she can feel the pressure as a form of encouragement rather than criticism. I don’t want her to give up what she loves because she doesn’t feel she’s good enough. Of course she’s good enough. Now to get her to believe it.

July 6
Long drive today from New Haven to southern Virginia. We detoured around a lot of traffic and made it in about 9 hours, including stops. Going between the same two spots in the opposite direction took almost an hour more, NOT including stops, so I call this a win. I’m looking forward to being back home tomorrow, although for what it’s worth, I’d rather still be enjoying some natural beauty instead of Five Guys burgers. I’m not much looking forward to going back to my old routine, which, frankly, kind of sucks.

June 24
The trip is underway. We were delayed a few hours because our a/c stopped working last night. The technician came by this morning and luckily it was a quick, easy fix. And then on the road! We couldn’t agree on where to go for dinner once we arrived in Virginia, and Robin and Christina weren’t thrilled about where we ended up, but turns out the food was great and they had something for everyone. I even got a BLT, which I had been craving in the car but never thought in a million years I’d find on any menu anywhere on our way. We hit traffic as we crossed into South Carolina for about 50 miles, but otherwise was smooth sailing. Tomorrow we head through Washington, DC, Baltimore, and NYC… headed through the Bronx at the end of a Yankees game… so I am not expecting great things, traffic-wise. I made a great 60’s playlist (I mean, truly great), and it is 19 hours of music, so it should get us to New Haven, no problem. I sang almost the whole way today. I’m sure I drove Billy crazy, but OH FUCKING WELL.

June 16
It was a hectic day. We spent time at a memorial service with Billy’s friend, Huie, whose father recently passed away. It was a lot of driving and I let myself be pulled in too many directions, but it was good to see old friends that we just don’t see very often. Next time it will be under better circumstances.

April 30
After a pretty good performance on Saturday, the girls had a drop on Sunday that landed them last place. Expectations for this competition were pretty low, so it wasn’t a big surprise, but it was still a disappointment. This photo is probably my favorite of the whole year so far because it shows that despite all their struggles over the years, Billy and Robin really do love each other. It was a very hard weekend, but we came out of it together, and that’s what matters.

April 18
This is not the photo I wanted to take, but it’s the photo I got, not unlike the 15 years of marriage we celebrated tonight. I don’t mean that to sound like a bad thing. Life rarely turns out the way we hope or expect. Part of living it means we roll with the punches and see what comes next. Tonight we got pork chops and mussels and bourbon and Sambuca. Tomorrow… hot dogs. Tonight I enjoyed a little bit of perfection with just the right amount of imperfection to make it worthwhile. You get what you get… and maybe that’s pretty good, after all.
