I missed my first day in this project since starting it in 2023. I’m so upset! Nothing to do about it now except keep going. Robin graduated 8th grade today. The ceremony was really nice. I cried during the reverse rose ceremony. I stopped myself from being audible, but it was hard. I’m proud of her for taking part and not being to anxious. I know that wasn’t easy for her. She looked beautiful and I’m so proud of her. I love watching her grow up!

The basketball games tonight showed improvement. The girls still only scored one basket, but that’s one basket more than their last game! And the boys only lost by 15. The sportsmanship of the other teams was much better than the first night, and I appreciated that. It’s a little unfair really, because our school is so small that even if half of all middle schoolers were playing on the basketball teams, we’d still have fewer players than the other, bigger schools. So honestly in the scheme of things, they’re doing ok. I mean, they’re not good, but at least there’s a good reason.

I am so frustrated with this one medication I take that is always a week delayed every month when I need to refill it. It literally lays me on my ass for days while I wait for it. Right now it’s been five days since I ordered it and it’s still out of stock. I can barely function. There really has to be a better way.

Christina had her science fair today and it was really cool! Everyone in fifth grade was assigned an experiment and had to present their methodology and results to an audience of milling parents. The demonstrations, presentations, and visuals were very well executed, and the kids really knew their stuff. They answered all my oddball questions without batting an eye (or even rolling an eye). And there were some neat experiments. One of Christina’s friends built a solar oven and baked cookies in it! Christina’s experiment had to do with circuits and which circuit operated faster – a fan or a light bulb. Everyone guessed light bulb, but Christina’s experiment proved us all wrong! You can’t argue with science!*

Christina had her fifth grade graduation today. It was a nice ceremony. Christina did not seem engaged, although she did give a speech with a couple of her classmates, and she did allow me to take one picture at the photo booth (but with no props). She had ordered an outfit in advance, but then didn’t wear it. She said it didn’t match. We offered to take her home afterwards, but she said no, which pissed off her sister, who would have gotten to come home with her. Even with all this, it was a good ceremony, and I think Christina appreciated it despite herself. Couple days left and then we’ll officially be out of the elementary school era. Something about that makes me sad. But I’m also excited to see what comes next. Proud of both my girls.

No sun yet, but here’s our rainbow! We could see the moon tonight, so who knows what tomorrow will bring?

I got some things off my chest today. Now it is kind of hovering in the air and I’m not really sure where it’ll land. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure it even matters, but we’ll see. I’m getting tired of second chances, even if I stand to gain from them. Second chances just seem to lead to more second chances. But still… soccer in the shadows. Robin kicked ass, even though they got their asses kicked. A sign of a champion.

The girls had their first soccer game of the season today. Robin didn’t play because she thought she wasn’t good enough. After watching today’s game, she now knows she need not worry. The important thing is they all had fun.

I was planning on skipping the school open house, but I’m glad Christina pushed me to go. It’s cool seeing what my kids are doing with their days, to meet their teachers, see their classrooms. Seaside is such a cool school… almost every room had a different essential oil diffusing and all the overhead fluorescent lights were turned off and replaced with Christmas lights and drapery and other incandescents. What a wonderful, inspiring way to teach and learn. Christina is learning about bees and felted this one in her handwork class. Yes, she has a handwork class. They will also be working with beeswax and making bee boxes as part of the unit. I am so glad we found this community.

I joined Christina on her field trip to St. Augustine today and it was a lot of fun! I learned a lot, including that I know next to nothing about the city of St. Augustine. I came home and passed out with a fever. Guess I caught whatever’s been going around. Darn.

The kids said they understood the word, “reverent,” but I’m not sure they did. Christina threw a tantrum before Robin’s spiral, so she went barefoot. I’m either the best or the worst mom for allowing that to happen. To be honest, I was just grateful she was in the car at all.

Trying to do more with my days where I can. I finally cleaned up the piles of papers that I had to take out of my broken filing cabinet. It resulted in two trash bags of shredded papers dating back to 2016. But now my office seems to have almost doubled in size. And then we went to the fall festival at school. The kids loved hanging out with their friends and I even talked to some other parents and it was a beautiful day. Nice to get out.

Tonight was teacher meet and greets at the kids’ school and boy did the kids run straight for Ms. LaTanya. And boy did she not just stop everything she was doing to embrace them. I’m sure there are lots of great schools out there, but I doubt if any of them could ever feel as much a part of our family as this one. Christina’s best friend isn’t in her class this year (oh the DEVASTATION), but she was off the walls crazy excited nonetheless. Robin’s BFF is in her class, so yay for that! She feels better now that she’s seen all her classrooms and met all her teachers, all of whom seem incredibly nice. They’re both excited for school to start. We’ll see what happens by this time next week.

Busy day getting ready to travel. I was trying to wrap up several things at work, but kept having to step away for one reason or another. This was a worthy cause, though. The kids spent the week at summer camp preparing a production of “Stone Soup,” and it was really good! Christina was the narrator and Robin was on the production crew. A nice break in the day.

The kids’ school hosted a movie night fundraiser at which zero people watched the movie. Kids were zooming by in every which way so that they were no more than blurred lines criss-crossing the semi-dark room. It was chaos, and all the parents sat in their folding chairs paying no attention while I curled up in Christina’s comforter and listened to the Yankees game on my headphones. If no one else cared, neither did I. I blew my WW total, too, on a day that had otherwise been going pretty well. Who knew two hot dogs and a small bag of popcorn was 29 points? Ok, I guess I knew. Oh well. Might as well throw in a beer at this point. Tomorrow is another day.
