Today involved a lot of work stupidity and a few moments of insightfulness. It rained, which felt nice. Other than that, nothing much of note.

More than a year after they moved here, I finally managed to come up and see Rob and Danielle. It was a long drive through more than a hundred miles of relentlessly pouring, torrential rain, but it was so good to see them today, and Bobby and Hailey. They are adorable. Looking forward to the rest of this weekend.

The girls and I went to the beach this morning to christen Christina’s new boogie board. The waves were huge and she had a great time. It was so refreshing being in the water… I don’t know why we haven’t been going more often, and I can’t believe I have to wait a whole week to go again. Glad we made it today, at least.

I was exhausted all day. Back to back meetings from the moment I logged on at work didn’t help. The kids had their school orientation in the morning and got to meet their teachers. Hard to believe this is Robin’s last year here. Christina went to get her hair cut after work, and ended up getting it colored back to her natural color (or at least close). She’s a lot happier with it now. I need to sleep for about two days.

Today’s lesson at work was: Don’t try to do it all. I guess I needed to hear that. For the first time in a month, I feel a little hopeful. Also: This rose is blooming, and I thought it had died. So I guess my rose is on the same page as me.

I finished reading The Neverending Story tonight. The first half is exactly like the movie. The second half isn’t part of the movie at all, which was pretty much the whole entire point of the book. Hollywood! I enjoyed it. It’s been very hot lately and my garden is withering in the heat. Took some time to water it this afternoon. I hope it helps. I also made sure to turn off the water… lesson learned after forgetting a couple weeks ago, flooding the entire yard, and receiving a water bill for $500. Jesus.

Robin did NOT leave her cooking class with a smile tonight. She didn’t want to taste her cake, she didn’t want to look at her cake, she didn’t want to touch her cake, she never wanted to make another cake ever again. Apparently she didn’t have enough of the color she wanted, and the piping didn’t work out, and to her it was so horrible that it ruined her whole week. But as it turns out, cake is irresistible. And even if it looked like shit, it tasted pretty good. See, now she knows how cake works.

Today was a lesson in gratitude for the saving of our marriage a year ago. I had dinner tonight with some incredibly fierce women who are teaching me what it means to be strong. And trust me, I thought I knew all there was to know about strength. It’s a different kind of strength they’re drawing on now, but I’m proud to know them, and grateful that they actually like hanging out with me. I’m one lucky woman. In about a million ways.

We made it back to Jacksonville with almost no traffic – very easy drive home. It feels so good to have the entire afternoon free. I’m already unpacked and ready for bed.

Robin’s beach volleyball camp is over. I forced her to do a tumbling evaluation at a new gym even though she said she didn’t want to. Christina had acro tonight and is THIS CLOSE to a back walkover. We learned that frozen broccoli doesn’t do well in a blender. We suspect Pinot may have eaten a bag of sour patch candies, but we can’t find the evidence. And so goes Friday.

We didn’t have any activities today, or at least I hope we didn’t, because we didn’t do any. I probably should have at least peeked at the calendar. If we missed something, oh well, too late now. Otherwise it was a pretty good day. I’ve been getting up at 5:30am all week to get into the gym before I drop the kids off at their respective camps. I’ll be glad when we’re back down to just one camp and one drop off and I can go to the gym in daylight again. But now it’s 9:45pm and I am ready for bed!

I completely forgot about this calla lily when I planted my garden this spring. When I saw the leaves coming up a few weeks ago, I was amazed that I hadn’t unearthed it while planting a rose literally on top of it. And tonight I was even more amazed to see that it flowered. It’s only the second time ever that we got a flower from it. I almost missed it, too, because it’s practically buried in the rose that I planted there. What a nice surprise.

Christina started camp at the Y today. I wasn’t sure how she’d like it, but she came home excited that she was the gagaball queen. I’m so glad she enjoyed it. Now Robin needs something to do.

Christina’s recital was a success. Rosina and Dion came bearing flowers, even for Robin, who they felt deserved them after surviving her long cheer season as well. That was so sweet of them. Now Christina can tear her ballet costume to shreds, and she probably will, too.

Had a pretty productive day. Got in my run (even if it doesn’t count because I forgot to set my watch to track it), did laundry, went food shopping, made a nice dinner and ate it on the patio. In between all that, I managed to do some fun things – beat the first round of the Harry Potter expansion game we got for Christmas, did some knitting. Now watching the Yankees lose to the Dodgers (again). Think I’ll finish the day with a beer.
