Now that I finished knitting Pinot’s sweater, I need a new project, so I started a pair of socks using some yarn I got last Christmas. Christina thinks I’m going to give them to her when I’m done. We’ll see.

December 12
I had four straight hours of meetings in which I was an active or leading participant, and by the middle of the last one, I had to pee so bad I really thought I was going to die right there on WebEx. I had also developed a steadily worsening headache. It was so hard to care about what I was teaching to the new hire class I was helping train. I ended the call exactly on time and although I wasn’t capable of running to the bathroom in my condition, I waddled over as best I could. I am still recovering. But I did win Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza twice. I always want to say chicken instead of cheese. I wonder what that means.

December 11
I worked out at the gym, worked at work, took Christina to dance, took Robin to cheer, came home, ate dinner (thank you, Billy), and instead of knitting or reading or doing crossword puzzles or paying bills or anything else, I watched crappy pointless TV for an hour. It felt like the biggest waste of time, but I needed the break.

December 10
Tuesdays are my easy days. No dance, no cheer, no reason to leave the house at all. We ate pizza and I knitted and watched Santa Claus: The Movie. It’s not the best movie out there, but I have some great memories of watching it when I was a kid. It felt to me then like the most likely version of Christmas and the North Pole. When I watch it, I get to be that kid again that is so immersed in the magic of Christmas that no other explanations for it seem plausible. Now that I hold the strings, it’s a different kind of magic. But it’s only possible because of that six-year-old me that climbed into this movie and lived in it for seven more years. I love Christmas.

December 8
We put up our village and it looks so quaint, I want to live inside it! Billy got railroad crossing signals that flash, and I think other than the Penn State firehouse and the Christmas countdown, that is my favorite thing on the table. I’m sure there will be more pics to come.

December 4
Got my boobs squished this morning (after they called me 17 times in less than two days to schedule). I was overflowing sarcasm at work, and then watched Robin’s cheer practice. The team struggled tonight and she was literally sick with anxiety over it. But the coach, who had pissed me off tremendously over the weekend with his endless condescending tone, came in on a complete 180. He was so motivational and supportive tonight. They dropped the same stunts every time for almost two hours. There were tears and Robin almost puked. But after an hour of talking to them, he got them out of their heads enough that they hit the whole routine without a drop. Robin never left a practice happier. It was exciting to watch. We’ll see if they can bring that momentum to Saturday’s competition. I hope so!

December 1
It’s gotten chilly here lately. I’m trying to avoid turning on the heat because I know Billy is part polar bear, but this morning it was 64 degrees in the house, and if it’s too cold to take a shower, then it’s too fucking cold. Also it’s 43 degrees outside right now and not only is the heat not on, I found an open window. Nope.

November 29
It doesn’t really feel like Christmas to me yet. Maybe since less than 24 hours ago it was still Thanksgiving.

October 22
I had a pretty productive day, and got this sweet owl ready for Christmas. It’s not looking likely that I’ll finish in time for this year, but I think definitely by next year. Making these ornaments has been fun. Some of them are better than others, but I’ve enjoyed making them all. I can’t wait to see this all finished and in action. The surprise of seeing which ornament you’ve pulled out of the pocket is more fun than I realized it would be. I’m always surprised when one of my ideas actually works out.

September 28
This dove took me half a day to make because apparently I suck at embroidery. I had to make six or seven wings before I finally got these two. I didn’t hate the effort, but it did take forever. Nine ornaments left to do and two months to do it.

September 6
I finished reading the Frederick Douglass book. I am learning so much, and I am so grateful. My mind is full of new ideas, things that contradict the things I previously thought were true. I want to read more. Who knew that one day at Fort Sumter would lead to this? That one day changed everything… again.

September 1
It was a pretty productive day. Took the kids clothes shopping because Robin wears the same three items every day and Christina has grown so much in the last year that not one item she owns fits her. There was a moment where I had to threaten to pick Christina’s clothes out for her if she didn’t find her own, but then we found the Holy Grail of pre-teen clothes and they couldn’t stop piling it on. I bought them everything. May we never have to go clothes shopping again. And then I spent the rest of the day making this cute gnome ornament for the advent calendar. It’s unlikely to be done in time for this year, but it might be close. I’ll take it.

August 5
I may have sewn some ornaments while doing trainings at work. I still have a lot of work to do.

January 6
Christmas is 95% over. One ornament is in triage, the bins need to be put away, and the furniture needs to be moved back and then that’s a wrap. Also today: fully finished the Lego building, started and finished a jigsaw puzzle from Mount St. Helens that we couldn’t remember ever doing before, and ate a delicious lemon poppyseed cake made by a friend at church for Christina’s birthday.

December 26
Today was being way too productive at work, finishing editing the photos from the family shoot I did last week, amazing homemade pizza for dinner, and beer with old friends until midnight. Girl’s still got it. (Ha.)
