I feel like I’m in the middle of a Christmas hangover. Partly it’s because my body is valiantly fighting off some kind of sickness and I’m tired and scratchy. But also it feels like we’re in the aftermath of a tornado that was made of peppermint and sparkles. Christmas is over but it still lingers. It’s not bad, really, there’s just a lot less anticipation. Anticipation is possibly the best part of Christmas. But tonight we played one of our new games, Mount Cleverest, and it was pretty fun. It turns out I am NOT actually the smartest one in the family. Or so the game would have us believe. I am not fooled.

We played Trivial Pursuit tonight. Billy won, but Christina finished the game in a foul mood, promising never to play with me ever again. She got a lot of hard questions and I got a lot of easy ones, and I guess she didn’t see the difference. But then we played That Escalated Quickly, and we’re getting better at that game too. Some of the things we come up with – no, some of the things CHRISTINA comes up with – are incredibly entertaining. I’m glad we got so many games for Christmas. This kind of family time makes me so happy.

Now that I finished knitting Pinot’s sweater, I need a new project, so I started a pair of socks using some yarn I got last Christmas. Christina thinks I’m going to give them to her when I’m done. We’ll see.

Tuesdays are my easy days. No dance, no cheer, no reason to leave the house at all. We ate pizza and I knitted and watched Santa Claus: The Movie. It’s not the best movie out there, but I have some great memories of watching it when I was a kid. It felt to me then like the most likely version of Christmas and the North Pole. When I watch it, I get to be that kid again that is so immersed in the magic of Christmas that no other explanations for it seem plausible. Now that I hold the strings, it’s a different kind of magic. But it’s only possible because of that six-year-old me that climbed into this movie and lived in it for seven more years. I love Christmas.

We put up our village and it looks so quaint, I want to live inside it! Billy got railroad crossing signals that flash, and I think other than the Penn State firehouse and the Christmas countdown, that is my favorite thing on the table. I’m sure there will be more pics to come.
