I dragged the kids to the zoo today. What a beautiful day to walk around the zoo! Also, it costs like four times as much to go there than I remember. And not totally worth it, in my opinion. But we did have fun and we saw a lot of animals. It was good to get out of the house.

We had an extra day in Orlando for Christina’s dance competition, so we went to Sea World. These dolphins looked like they were having so much fun. They reminded me of Pinot, willing to do anything for even just one kernel of dog food, and loving every second of it. The roller coasters were a lot of fun, too – we dared ourselves on all of them and none of them disappointed. The only one Robin didn’t like was the one that went backwards and straight up really fast. She thought it would fly right off the track. Overall, a nice way to spend the day.

July 24
Billy finally got his car back today after hydroplaning over a month ago on June 17. We have gotten so used to living with just one car. It helps that I work at home and he works overnights. I am so glad I won’t have to drive the same car he did right after going to the gym (god that man sweats a lot when he works out, yuck). Or drive around with millions of water bottles and sunglasses all over the place, or change the radio station every time I get in the car, or close the windows and turn on the a/c (really, no a/c in 99-degree weather with 97% humidity?), or adjust the mirrors or the seat. In short, Billy’s not the only one happy he has his own car again. P.S. I sort of feel like these geese could be on their own Abbey Road album cover.

This snake ate this lizard right before my very eyes on our back patio. The dogs, both looking out the window with me, were both completely oblivious.

March 17
After more than ten years, we finally made it to the Catty Shack Ranch. And instead of any of the beautiful cats, bears, and foxes they’ve rescued, I took a photo of one of the wandering roosters. I was promised that while the tigers do mostly get fed chicken, they do not eat THESE chickens. Once an animal comes to live at the ranch, they are safe. No discrimination.

I took Christina to the zoo today and on the way home we drove on the highway with all the windows open. It was so loud, but I could still hear Christina singing at the top of her lungs out the window. I absolutely love the little girl in her. I hope that innocence and creative spirit never dies.

This is Coconut the hermit crab, Christina’s class pet for whom we are caring this weekend. This is the first time I’ve seen him out of his shell since we brought him home yesterday afternoon. He seems very timid but has been happily drinking water for about 45 minutes. I guess hermit crabs, like the inner workings of my job, do not move quickly.

February 5
Today was terrible. I had to sing at church, which is always nerve-wracking. I felt like I sounded awful and I hated every second of it. Then I had big plans to go to the zoo with my DSLR and telephoto lens. I charged up the battery, got all my gear together, forced Robin to come against her will, got there, went to take my first picture, and realized I’d left the camera battery on the charger at home. It went downhill from there. Robin didn’t want to be there and let everyone know it. Christina had been at a sleepover the night before, so she was exhausted. Great combination – they started bickering, Robin kept asking to go home, so I just lost my shit and took them home without another word. Also today is the 31st anniversary of the day Dad died. I would love to go to bed and let tomorrow be another day, but tomorrow is MONDAY, and I can’t even face what that means. I don’t know how I am going to get through the rest of this month.
