I have made a family calendar every year since 2005 based on photos taken throughout the year. In 2022 I sat down to make our 2023 calendar and realized that I’d only taken 50 photos the entire year. It was hardly representative of our year and went to show how little care I’d been putting into my days. That New Year’s Eve, I resolved to take one photo every day in 2023, even if the photos were utter crap. This is the culmination of that resolution.
The effort yielded somewhat unexpected results in that I only expected to have a minimum of 365 photos by the end of the year. What I actually have is a daily reminder that each day is unique and has at least one thing in it worth remembering. If the photo stinks, then maybe something else in the day is worth remembering. That’s where the captions come in. Taking at least one photo every day allowed me to appreciate that day, even if the photo was of nothing more than a ball of yarn on my nightstand.
The other unintended consequence of this project is getting to see the full value of a year, the ups and downs and everything in between. I can see what went well and what didn’t – what I need to do more of and what I need to do less of. It’s easy to think you know that, but when you see it laid out in front of you, it’s hard to ignore.
So here is 2023. 2024, here I come.
